DO NOT EAT PEANUT BUTTER!

Who’da thunk it?

Really, who would have thought that we would be afraid of peanut butter? Salmonella? Are you kidding me? What do I feed my daughter for lunch now? As if it wasn’t bad enough that the economy has me crimping my food budget as it is, now I can’t buy THE STAPLE kid food? Really?

No, seriously, as near as I can tell, jars of peanut butter are safe. So far. But the list of recalls grow and grow. As a Wal-Mart assistant manager, my inbox has been flooded with emails to confirm that we have received the information and taken the appropriate steps. The items are locked out of the registers, so even if you happen to attempt to buy a recalled item, the system won’t let you. But it’s gotten to a point where they should just send out an email that says ‘If it’s got peanut butter in it, forget it!’

I truly hope that this leads to more accountability on the manufacturer’s parts. People remember these kinds of things. We still won’t buy painted plastic toys for our two year old. How long ago was that debacle? And now, we’re not buying peanut butter. A total shame, because my wife is currently pregnant, which is always hard on her. One of the few things she can keep down is peanut butter toast. Finding a replacement hasn’t been the easiest thing, though organic bread from Avon Bakery & Deli with veggie cream cheese seems to be close…

This entire episode has lead me to post a widget on the side of my blog from the FDA of all the items that are currently on recall. As far as I can tell, this widget is as close as you can get to having the ‘inside scoop’ on the matter.

I will continue to seek out this type of information and pass it on to you, devoted reader, because our families are all that truly matter.
