This Fatherhood Friday, I wanted to give you the update on Kat’s Australian adventures!

We’ve been communicating through text and the leader has been emailing us, so unfortunately, there are no pictures yet. They are in and out of phone service, and don’t have access to email very often, but here’s what I know so far:

They have repelled off of the Blue Mountains, swam at the Olympic Park, toured the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Aquarium, visited the Opal Museum, took a cruise of Sydney Harbor, visited the Parliament House, swam at Edith Falls, visited Aborigines, and Kat wrestled a sheep.

Let me tell you, I’m uber-jealous. I just texted Kat, and she said she won against the sheep, by the way. I can’t wait to see the pics!

———————————————————————————————-

Stateside, I’m still working on that regeneration I talked about earlier, with some of the life changes possibly interrupting my launch of the webcomic. Trust me when I say everything will be better for it…

Speaking of webcomics, I have been surfing around for others that have a family-friendly feel. If you haven’t seen these, check them out:

Red’s Planet

Dog Eat Doug

The Bean

My Cardboard Life

Calli doesn’t seem to be that jazzed about T-Ball… when she’s there. At home, she can’t wait to go again.

Tristin is really testing out his legs, and has even taken a couple of steps! He’ll be running marathons any day now…

She’ll be receiving her copy of Sugar Milk in the mail soon, I’m shipping it today! Congrats, and thank you so much Joanne!

With that, I am pleased to announce that through the generosity of my blog readers, friends, family, and a few impromptu garage sales (not to mention most of my tax return), Kat’s trip to Australia with People to People is now reality! She flies out on the 16th for 17 days in the Land Down Under. I can’t believe that it’s that soon! Incidentally, on the graphic above, I found a font on Artweaver called ‘Australian Sunrise’. What else would I use? Here’s a glance at Kat’s itinerary while she’s down there:

Be sure to swing by for all the other great Dads and Moms who love to share their lives online!

In the spirit of Fatherhood Friday and Week In Review, here’s what’s happening in the Howefitz world:

At the park yesterday, Calli claimed that I was a strong guy because I ‘pick up small childrens’…

Wednesday was Calli’s first day of Tee-Ball! She learned the ‘alligator’ and how to hold the ball, throw it overhand and catch. And even though practice went in to nap time and somebody got a little cranky, we all had a blast! Here are a couple highlights:

Practicing sccoping up the ball with 'the alligator'.

I could totally do 'the alligator'...

Then Calli got ahold of the camera:

'She's only 3, she's probably not even getting a picture of me. I'll just look crazy to play along...'

'Sissy has the camera. Ready penetrating gaze.'

Yesterday, we went to a park in Dillon, CO that we don’t get to very often. Pics!:

Tristin's working on his 'Superman'...

Attempts at a nearly complete family portrait with small children on a bouncy dock in high winds:

After the park, we went to a bookstore where Tristin saw a Batman book. He started shaking his fists in excitement, and, I swear, whispered an excited ‘Baban!’ It was better than if he had said ‘Daddy!’ At nine months, the fanboy training is paying off…

In other news, (Last, but not least) I bought the domain name for my upcoming webcomic. It will be called ‘Howefitz Sequential’, in honor of my web moniker and the more intellectual way of identifying comics: ‘sequential art’ (the art of telling a story in a sequence of pictures and words). Plus it kind of sounds like one of my favorite movies, ‘LA Confidential’, so I’m pretty proud of myself for coming up with it! Don’t visit the site yet, I’m busy building it and completing at least three weeks worth of material before I launch. I’m shooting for an official launch date of July 5. I’ll keep you posted!

Thanks for stopping by, and Happy Fatherhood Friday!

I don’t think a day goes by that I am not amazed at the stories my three year old, Calli, likes to tell. This is how storytime generally goes in my house:

Calli: Daddy, can’t you tell me a story? (This is how she asks for everything now. ‘Daddy, can’t you…’ As if she’s tired of asking.)

Me: What kind of story?

Calli: I don’t know…

Me: OK. So. Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Calli.

Calli: Was she a Princess?

Me: Yes, she was a beautiful Princess!

Calli: Did she have a brother named Tristin?

Me: Yes she did! And he was a Prince! He was as handsome as Princess Calli was beautiful.

Calli: Yeah!

And so on. It’s kind of cool, actually, she makes my job easy!

=====================================================

As I mentioned in a previous post, I’m playing around with trying to create a webcomic based on my family. I posted my first design of Kat as a manga character on DeviantArt last night, but if you missed the tweet, I’m posting it below. I’m taking my time with this, and I want to have three weeks of the comic done before I launch. But I’ll be posting sketches and ideas at DeviantArt and Flickr, and of course, sharing it all through Twitter and Facebook. So feel free to follow, friend, or fan me to see if my excitement will translate to the electronic page!

Speaking of Kat, we’re in serious crunch time for raising money for her Student Ambassadorship to Australia! They need all the money by May 14! We’re having a garage sale this weekend in a last ditch effort. If you would like to contribute, please see the ‘Chip-In’ badge to the right of the blog. Every little bit is appreciated, and we’ll make sure you get a Howe original thank you note from Kat either from the Land Down Under, or as soon as she gets home!

I would like to take this heightened traffic opportunity to once again ask for your help.

We just recently found out that Kat needs to finish raising the money for her People to People delegation to Australia by May 14th! If you are able, please make a donation of any comfortable amount by clicking on the Chip-In button to the right of this page. Kat and my wife are working on hand drawn thank you cards that will be sent to you from Australia, time allowing, or when she gets home. If you’ve already donated, you’re already on our mailing list!

A work in progress by my wife...

In other news…

Calli, the 3 year old, has become increasingly bossy, despite the constant reminders to say thank you. The establishment of who’s boss seems to be constantly on her mind. A few nights ago, as we were getting ready for bed, Calli pointed at me and said, ‘You can’t boss me, Daddy. Mommy can boss me. That’s her job.’

She must have doubted that fact a couple nights later. ‘Mommy, you’re not the boss of me!’ Only to quickly recant, ‘Oh. Wait. You ARE the boss of me!’

I’ve spent all morning working on today’s post, well, the bits of the morning where I wasn’t taking The Teenager to school. Then there were the times I was holding the baby, which is a chore, let me tell you. Every time I hold that warm little snuggly body against me I can’t help thinking that I’d much rather be in front of my glaring blank white computer screen instead of throwing the baby in to the air and hearing his sweet, genuine giggle as I tickle under his ribs with my nose. Who wants that?

Anyway, where was I? Oh, yeah! I’ve spent all morning on a post that I can be proud of. This is not that post. I’ve decided to postpone that post until next Fatherhood Friday in order to do more research and obtain further photographic evidence.

So for today, please enjoy this peek in to my random fatherly brain, and I promise, next week will be a post more worthy of your precious time.

My wife is the best editor/reviewer that I could ask for. She is the one person that I would allow to give me advice on my writing. She nails it every time, and is the reason the real post for today is postponed. I felt like something was missing, and she filled in the blanks. Man, I love her.

Pandora just played Richard Strauss’s ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra (Thus Spoke Zoroaster), Tone Poem For Orchestra, Op. 30‘, which was the theme for ‘2001: A Space Odyssey‘, and I had to stop what I was doing and turn it up. I lowered myself to the level of my desk and imagined my laptop was a monolith. It did not, however, make me more cosmically aware. It just wanted to tell me not to use teeth whiteners or drink acai berry juice. The search for cosmic enlightenment continues…

Last night, my considerate Calli gave my wife an astute warning about the window sill: ‘Don’t touch that,’ she said, ‘I put a booger there.’ She’s so thoughtful!

Tristin’s asleep in his bouncy while still holding tightly to his knobby bouncy ball. He’s so cute!

My wife hasn’t missed a day on the Wii Fit since we started, while it just yelled at me for missing four. My Mii is now sentenced to wear a hoody to sweat it out. Come on, Wii! I’ve been busy!

We’re still wrestling with exactly the right punishment for Kat after she dented the wall with the Wii remote, and then didn’t tell us… Any ideas out there?

I am pleased and honored to announce that I have 42 fans on Facebook after starting my fan page four days ago! Thank you all for the support! If you haven’t fanned me yet, there’s a convenient badge on the right for you to do so! My hope is that the page will add another level of interactivity to this blog, and sometimes I’ll be using it as a testing ground for upcoming posts, so be sure to check the discussion board! (Hint, there are a couple of discussions up now…)

Aaaand… my brain just stopped working. Hope all is well with you, and have a great time reading all the other Fatherly posts on this Fatherhood Friday!

Be sure to swing by for all the other great Dads and Moms who love to share their lives online!

I’m not going to lie. I started this blog to try to make money.

A year ago, I discovered guys like John Chow and Shoemoney. I saw sites like Problogger and thought, ‘Man, I could do that! Let me at it!’

A year ago this month I started the Howefitz blog, and I have not made one cent. In fact, I’ve lost a few. (I’m lookin at you, aweber!)

But the fact remains that my blogging intensity has increased during the course of the year, and I have no intentions of stopping, because this is fun!

If you go back to the beginnings of this blog (and I highly recommend that you do NOT) you will see that I had no direction. I was looking for ways to build readers and make CASH! I was reading all the pros tell me to build networks and find other bloggers and SEO and blahblahblah.

Who wouldn't want to blog moments like these?

My wife kept saying, ‘Well, it looks like the guys that are making money on the internet are blogging about how to make money on the internet.’

Right. And you should always write what you know. And I (obviously) do not know how to make money on the internet.

Then, as these things go, I discovered dad-o-matic, and then dad-blogs.

(Sound of needle being yanked off a record) Wait. Wait one minute. There are dads. Dads on the internet. Dads on the internet blogging about their families.

…

And…

…they were interesting!

These weren’t boring home movies of someone else’s vacation or their kids taking their first step, this was all about the emotions of having a family. This was about supporting each other and giving each other advice.

All kinds of dads: stay at home dads, gay dads, married dads, single dads, divorced dads…

All these dads were rising to the challenge of trying to put into words their thoughts and feelings about being a dad and all the challenges that come with it!

I sat back in my chair and exhaled. This was something I could talk about! You never run out of material from your family! There’s always somebody saying or doing something funny or heart warming! I love being a dad! I can do that!

So I haven’t made a dime. As you can see, the google ads are gone, there’s very little in the way of advertising here. I occasionally review a book or movie and try to hock it through my amazon associate account, but nobody ever buys.

What I’ve earned through this blog is more important than any monetary gain. It’s become a writing exercise. It’s become a way for me to put words and thoughts together, sometimes coherently, in a way to elicit an emotional response from others. But mostly, it’s made me a lot of friends.

Ron Mattocks, author of the blog Clark Kent’s Lunchbox and the upcoming book Sugar Milk said it best recently:

The thing about blogging that makes it so different from just writing is that it’s about community, and community requires interaction. … The blogging community has become very real to me, almost as real as calling up people that are physically in my area, and meeting them for lunch; in some cases I interact with blogging buddies more than my own extended family.

That community is what has made me not only blog my heart out whenever possible, (Mainly when everyone else is asleep, like right now…) but what has also inspired me to write the sporadic column ‘Kids Play On The Net‘ at Dad-Blogs, among other unpaid projects I have in mind.

Plus, I absolutely love having a venue where I can show that I have the Greatest Family On The Planet™.

So, I would like to thank you all for the continued support, and hope that you like hearing about my life as much as I enjoy living and sharing it!

Here (in no particular order) are some friends I’ve made through blogging and their blogs:

Eric Bolton of Juggling Eric and Marvel Off the Clock

I claim to be a blogger, but with that comes keeping in touch with the world around me. On this front I have failed. I just noticed that Jason over at Ramblings and Run-Ons has given me a Keepsake Blog Award. I just saw it, and feel terrible because that means I missed one of his FatherHood Friday posts, which I usually try to keep up with. But now that I know, I would like to say ‘Thank you, thank you very much’ to Jason and I am flatterered to know that my blog stands out as a keepsake in your mind. The feeling is mutual. Now, as with any blogging award that I’ve seen, this one comes with a couple of caviats: 1) I must pass this prestigious honor along to ten of my favorite bloggers. 2) I have to share a keepsake moment in my life. When I learned of this, I started tracing the award back, trying to find original blogs that had not already been given the award. That effort thwarted, here is my list, in no particular order, some of which someone beat me to honoring them. You can blame my day job!

All of the above add much needed information/entertainment/feelings of shared experiences to my blog-reading life. There are many more that I read on a semi-regular basis, it was obviously hard to narrow down the top 10!

OK, on to the keepsake…

In my post, ‘My Big Family Announcement’, I announced to my family and the world that we would be celebrating Christmas in July this year.

Well, as John Lennon brilliantly said, ‘Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.’ To quote another lyrical poet, Paul Simon, ‘Believing I had supernatural powers I slammed in to a brick wall.’

I tend to leap before I look. I get all excited and impulsive and generally pay for it later. Christmas in July sounded wonderful until I realized we are on a very tight budget and Calli’s birthday is the 31st, sooo we should probably save a little moolah for that. A kid only turns 3 once after all, Christmas comes every year.

But I already blogged about my July Christmas. All those nice people commented and told me it was a good idea! I was told to take pictures! How can I let down my adoring public?

I stewed on this for quite a while before I just abandoned the idea all together. That is until…

I still got my vacation, this is day two, FTW! So the wife wakes me up and asks, ‘What’s going on around here? Anything fun?’

‘I don’t know, let me get online and find out!’ I reply, in the back of my head there was still a voice: It’s Christmas! What are you doing about Christmas?

So I sat down at the computer, pulled up the site for the local paper, the Vail Daily, and what to my wondering eyes should appear this event:

God bless us, everyone! And God bless the Turntable Restaurant, they were serving turkey dinner with all the fixins for $9.96 a plate! After my Jacob Marley impression and picking my chin up off of the keyboard, I realized this could do it! Like a TV special, my Christmas had been saved! My day of laying around in my PJs opening presents and stuffing myself had been thwarted, but here was a local establishment who shared my sentiments!

On our way there this afternoon, we had some time to kill, so I followed the arrow under a picture of a picnic table to a park we’d never been to. The Eagle River runs along side it, there are trees that shade the entire playground, there is a small stage with a grassy slope for the audience surrounded by flowers. Visions of Shakespeare festivals danced in my head. This place was perfect!

When we did arrive at the Turntable, it was right up my alley. From the name you probably guessed, but it’s one of those nostalgia greasy spoon places that’s plastered with Elvis, Marilyn, Barbie, and the occasional Mickey Mouse. Add to that the cheesey light-up Santa with accompanying reindeer, and this was definitely Christmas! ;P

We entered, and a man with a Creole accent said, ‘HO HO HO! Welcome to Christmas in JUE-LIE!’

Santa had left a bag of candy for Calli, and Kat got in for a reduced kids’ price. ‘You look young, you mus’ jus’ be tall!’ The Creole man said.

The turkey was moist, the mashed potatoes weren’t lumpy, and I even was able to eat the candied yams (I try them every year, but I never like them). They had brownies and cookies for dessert.

I tell you, it was just what I needed: time with family, good food, and awful decor. After dinner, we went back to the river and Calli and I skipped stones (or made a great attempt!).

This was, without a doubt, the Best. Christmas. Ever.

I leave you with a copy of the flyer from the Turntable and a picture of Kat in what appears to be a futon-shaped rock in the river…

Merry Christmas!

Although I do my best to participate in FatherHood Friday each week, it’s been a while since I posted a Fiction Friday post. Inspired by one of Kat’s sketches, I decided to do just that…

The darkness was thick as chowder. The audience sat in nervous anticipation. Not a child stirred, nor adult clear their throat. No event save the royal croquet match was as anticipated as the Mad Hatter’s Carnivale and Cavalcade. A drum roll began like the faintest, distant roll of thunder. A crescendo and a cymbal crash. A spotlight sliced the darkness like one of the Red Queen’s executioners taking off a head. In the beam of light stood the Mad Hatter. His green pants and jacket shimmered with rainbows in the spotlight. His large bowtie did not flop as it usually did, but stood proudly horizontal. His head was bowed as much as it could be with such a bowtie, and the spotlight glared off of the tag: ‘This style 10/6″. The wide brim of the hat obscured the little man’s face, but his large front teeth protruded like white monoliths. When he spoke, the nasal voice echoed from the wall of the big top though there was no evidence of a microphone or anything else.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, March Hares and Doormice, It is without any further ado that I present … the Greatest Show In Wonderland!”

The big top lit up as if it were daylight to reveal an extraordinary array of colorful characters. Mice danced on large colorful balls, angels danced on pins, a magnificent elephant carried a Persian Prince who waved to the crowd that exploded with cheers of gratitude and excitement. The Red Queen applauded despite herself. A Cheshire Cat juggled his head. The Doormouse was wide awake.

The Mock Turtle sang, “Now I will, Now I can, Join the dance!” The only tear on his face was one of sheer joy.

The griffin spread his wings that glistened in the theatrical lights like stars in a sky with no moon.

Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum shook hands and danced and fell over each other, laughing all the while.

The White Rabbit, of course, had to hurry to catch up.

Just as the procession really got going, the music ceased and the lights went out. The audience, dazed and with ears ringing, fumbled for their seats as the Mad Hatter’s voice was heard.

“Twinkle, Twinkle, little crowd

Your applauding was much too loud.

Up above the show you sit

Don’t make a peep, not one bit.”

The crowd did not move. Silence took over once more. The blinding light illuminated the Hatter once more.

“Thank you.” The Hatter said, removing his hat to reveal long rabbit ears and a rabbit face. The crowd gasped. Beady black rabbit eyes turned, examining the crowd. “As you can see, I’ve been through some… changes.” Everyone remained still and quiet. “My attempts to bring Alice back to Wonderland have gone unsuccessful. But the March Hare and I …

Well, we put aside our tea and bisquits and spent quite a long time searching. We became so engrossed in the work that we began to think as one.” He quickly turned to the left, and seemed to take on another voice. A familiar voice. The voice of the March Hare. “So we literally became one!”

The crowd gasped. It was grotesque. It was horrifying. It was exactly something those two mad creatures could and would do.

The Hatter’s head snapped to the right. “Do not be alarmed. We really just wanted Alice’s attention.”

Left. “Are you getting this, Alice?”

Alice awoke in a cold sweat. She clutched the bedclothes to her chest. She looked over at her husband, who seemed to bear the slightest resemblance to a Mad Hatter she had once met as a child. She shook her head and looked again. There was her handsome husband. She slipped out of bed without disturbing him and looked in at her kids. They slumbered peacefully. There were no white rabits or doormice or any Wonderland creatures hiding in her home.

Alice went back to bed. She put her arm around her dear husband and drifted back to sleep, swearing that she or her family would never ever know the horrors of Wonderland again.

She hoped that they wouldn’t.

But her dreams were always there, pulling her back. The March Hatter had been wrong.

Alice would never be able to leave Wonderland…

Calli can help you conquer the world!

Yesterday I was stressed at work. The day before that, I was stressed at work. Last week: yeah, more stress. I don’t want to get up in the morning. I don’t blog but once a week (FatherHood Friday, as seen at dad-blogs.com! Be sure to check out all the cool moms and dads who selflessly share the lives of their families for your entertainment and delight!) I can hardly take making a decision anymore, because somehow it’ll be wrong to someone.

So. After a stressful day at work, I walked through the pouring rain to my car. Generally, when it’s raining and I feel blue, I imagine myself as David Banner, put my hands in my pockets and whistle the ‘Incredible Hulk’ theme, but this time it wasn’t enough to make me feel better. I had to stay later than I wanted, causing us to miss the performance of Alice in Wonderland I really wanted to take Calli to. I popped the trunk and realized I’d left the laptop back in the office. Perfect. Only I didn’t think ‘perfect’. I try to keep my blog family-friendly, so I’ll leave out what I really thought.

I drove home, rain crashing on the windshield. I did NOT turn on the radio. I just sulked.

So I come home to the family. Calli is inconsolable. She REALLY wants to go outside. But she doesn’t want to wear her raincoat or boots. We plead with her and essentially wrestle her to the ground to get her to don her rain acoutrements. I try real hard to tuck in the raw nerve she keeps stepping on. It’s not her fault I had a bad day, week, and month. She’s just being her precocius two-year old self. And judging from stories I’ve heard, she’s not even all that bad!

Raingear on, Calli, Kat, and their Mom go outside. I pace the apartment, not wanting to be rude to my family, but feeling like I need a moment alone. The half hour in the silent car wasn’t enough. Aw, heck, I’ll go see what they’re up to!

I stepped outside my building in my Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robot pajama pants and Legion of Super Heroes t-shirt (a sign I truly don’t care. I normally don’t set foot outside in something like that! I usually match the pants to the t-shirt, come on!) and turn left, so absorbed in my sulking that I don’t notice the family off to the right.

“Justin!” I hear my wife call. I turn to see her jogging back to our apartment. “I gotta get the camera! Wanna go watch the kids playing in the mud?”

I looked over, and there they were: the two ‘sissies’ (sisters, not cowards) were splashing and playing in the mud.

Calli looked up with her big baby blues and said, “Try it, Daddy!”

“I don’t know, maybe later.”

“Peeeeaze? I wanta you to try it!”

“OK.”

Good times...

I kicked off my sandals and let the mud ooze between my toes. I watched Calli and Kat stomp around in the mud. We laughed and splashed and played. I began to think of when I was a kid, and rain was almost magical! Rain was when you went outside and splashed and played and delighted in your merry mess making. Rain’s not a literary symbol for sadness and depression. Rain is liberating and cleansing. I had forgotten that.

Kids will do that to you. Sometimes you have to shake off the cranial-anal disorder to see it.

———————————————————————————————–

When I post Kat’s art, I get comments that say ‘Keep them coming!’ So, I’m happy to oblige!

Today we present some Kat-style fantasy!

The smell of stale gym socks infused my nostrils with testoterone and bravado. I had just finished swimming at the rec center and was changing into my dry clothes when a young muscular man struck up a conversation with me.

“Hey how’s it goin’?” he asked.

“Good, you?” I answered. All the fears of high school locker rooms flooded irrationally back. Does this guy want to kick my ass? Why is he talking to me?

“Great!” he answered. “So do you have kids in here?”

How the hell would he guess that? I looked down at the Elmo beach towel I had used that night. Oh. “Yes, I do.”

“How old?”

I thought of the flack I’ve taken on this blog by a couple readers for using the term ‘step-daughter’, so I simply said, “I have a two year old and a fifteen year old.”

“Wow!” he said, “You don’t look old enough to have a fifteen year old!”

“Well,” I said, ego slightly pumped now, old high school jock prejudices slowly fading, “my wife is five years older than me. The fifteen year old is my step-daughter. So that’s how I get out of that!”

He laughed, “Aw, man. I have a step-dad. He’s the best! We still hang out all the time. I hardly ever see my real dad. I think step-dads are great!”

“Well, right now it seems like she doesn’t feel that way a lot of the time!”

“Trust me, she will appreciate you. Just keep showing an interest in her life!”

“Alright, I think I can do that!” I said. “Speaking of my family, they’re probably just about done in their locker room, I’d better get them home.”

“Cool, man. Nice meeting you!”

“Yeah, you too.”

Check out the other cool guys and gals who participate in Fatherhood Friday at dad-blogs.com!

And I do take an interest in her life, and even though she’s fifteen and trying out this independence thing, we can still hold conversations about movies, comics (well, in her case manga), music, etc. So I think we’re on a good path.

I volunteered to teach a comic book class at the library recently, and she had to be a part of it. She wasn’t embarassed by my Green Lantern T-shirt that I wore. (Even though I tucked it in, which drives her crazy!) And afterward when I asked her what she thought, she said it was pretty cool. High praise, indeed!

Moral of the story, at least for me? No matter how old your kids get, you’ll still be learning. And even if you’re not biologically linked to your child, it’s still possible to be his/her dad!
