My Big Family Anouncement…

fatherfridayI got home from a late night at work tonight, and there came a moment when the entire family was in the same room at the same time. Individual members of the family started announcing things that they were going to do: bits of nighttime rituals. ‘I’m taking a quick shower’, etc.

‘Wait!’ I exclaimed. ‘Since everyone is here, I’d like to announce a decision I’ve made!’

The family looked at me expectantly. I had thought about it all day. If I were to act, it had to be soon.

‘I have decided to celebrate, actually celebrate, Christmas in July! I want turkey and stuffing and each of us can even have a present!’

‘Turkey? Shouldn’t we have something summery?’ Kat asked.

‘Nope, I want Christmas food!’ I said.

This is completely self-indulgent. I have worked retail for twelve years, which has completely ruined the holidays for me. I always have to be at work at something like 4AM the day after Thanksgiving, and this past year I even had to work Christmas night, essentially to make the store look like Christmas never happened by the time we opened on the 26th.

Who says this has to happen in December? Feh.

Who says this has to happen in December? Feh.

I’ve got vacation coming to me starting the 23rd, so on July 25th, my family and I will turn off the phones, leave the computer turned off, lay around in our jammies, open presents, and stuff ourselves with turkey and all the fixin’s. I’ll probably throw on some Christmas MP3s for good measure.

Working retail will not ruin Christmas this year!

I know your pain. I work in retail after a 20-year career in journalism. I started last October, initially hired as temporary holiday help. My education in retail came on the job, fast and furious. Management had to be in the store at 2 a.m. The next tier came in between 3 and 3:45 a.m. and our store opened at 4 a.m. Somehow, I got what a co-worked called princess hours. I worked 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. I now know first hand why they call it “Black Friday.” It has nothing to do with the bottom line, or everything to do with the bottom line, if you work in retail. It’s not a good day to be in retail.

I absolutely love your idea. Who says Christmas has to be celebrated on Dec. 25 when snow is on the ground and people are slipping and sliding and grumbling through life? I hope you have a fantastic day! I hope you decorate for the day, put up the tree, make spiked eggnog, or whatever you need to do to make the day feel like Christmas. Please let us know how it went. I’ve heard the phrase “Christmas in July,” but I’ve never known anyone to celebrate it then. Good for you!

Unfortunately, Christmas has become the biggest hassle in our house. I love Christmas and the reason for the celebration. I’ve never been able to get off more than the day of and the day after/before. I actually was able to get the whole week off this year…

    But what happens…

We get pregnant and we’re going to be due around Christmas time..

At least we don’t have to go to all the families houses..

    Merry Christmas and God Bless.

Man that sounds like awesome fun!! I worked retail for about 3 years but it was in a mom and pop store so I didn’t have to worry about all of the holiday hassle. Which is a good thing because I start prepping for Christmas in August! If I make it until October without putting on the Christmas music it’s a good year for my wife :) Have a great Christmas!!

    LOL!

    Awesome idea!

I remember my time working retail in December. I actually found myself starting to hate the holiday.

Enjoy the time with your family.

And remember…it’s not Christmas until someone plays ‘Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer’..
