Grab your 3D glasses, It’s Fatherhood Friday!!!

I have always loved 3D images. I spent countless hours as a child staring through my ViewMaster and marveling at the wonderful images that I felt like I could reach in and grab. I was disappointed when I bought a ViewMaster projector at a garage sale, only to find out that it only projected through one image, creating a very flat clay Bambi on my wall. If I wanted 2D images on my wall, I could have gotten a poster…

I’ve been excited to see 3D stuff making a comeback. Coraline, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Up, and Journey to the Center of the Earth are just a few recent films that have been presented in glorious 3D. There are even tablecloths for your children’s birthday parties that appear 3D with the help of special glasses. 3D is definitely a presence in our entertainment once again.

So when I saw the latest issue of Maximum PC that promised I could create my own 3D images, I bought that mag faster that I could say ‘Awesome!’

And I can, and I did. The first image I created was of the magazine itself. I was trying to keep it simple. blogmaxpc

I had several other successes and failures, culminating in my favorite of Tristin sleeping in his swing.blogtristin1

Now, one thing that has to be remembered if you’re going to try this with one camera, is that your subject has to be absolutely still. I tried to get Calli with some of her toys, but she moved her head, creating a rather creepy image that I didn’t post here.

I’m excited about this. I’m already making plans to build a rig that would allow me to take two pictures at once in order to catch moving objects (i.e. kids) in 3D, as detailed in the magazine. Visions of my own 3D comics and youtube videos are dancing in my head. Who knows where this will take me?!
