Sunday Sermon: The 21 Day Experiment Continues. No Complaints. No Excuses.

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

For those of you that are just tuning in, or Googled ’spiritual enlightenment’ and somehow wound up here, let me assure you that Sunday Sermons here at Howefitz Blog are anything but sermons. Here I explore matters of the spirit in a way that, I hope, inspires thought within others. I am not here to tell you what to believe, and any viewpoint is welcome…

The Sunday Sermons here at Howefitz Blog are generally intended to explore the philosophies and religions of the world, and to hear your take. Today I’m bending the rules a little, but still discussing a way of thinking that our entire world is possibly embroiled in: that of complaining.

21 Days. No Complaints. No Excuses.

A good blog is like a good book. Sometimes you want to go back and revisit posts that meant something to you. One such post by Tim Ferriss has been rattling around in my head A LOT lately. This post was called Real Mind Control: The 21 Day No-Complaint Experiment. In the post, Tim told us of Will Bowen, a Kansas City minister who decided to try an experiment. He would wear a purple bracelet to remind him not to complain for 21 days. If he did complain, he would switch his bracelet to the other wrist and start over at day 1. This is because scientists say that it takes 21 days to form a habit. If you don’t complain for 21 days straight, you’ve just formed a habit of not complaining!

FatherHood Friday Quickie: Australia Update

Friday, February 26th, 2010

With my new three on, three off schedule at work, it gets hard to sit down and pound something out for certain days. Since I’m in the middle of the three on cycle, I’m furiously typing this just before leaving for work. I just had to give an update on Kat’s trip to Australia with People to People.

Sunday Sermon: Life After Death?

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

For those of you that are just tuning in, or Googled ’spiritual enlightenment’ and somehow wound up here, let me assure you that Sunday Sermons here at Howefitz Blog are anything but sermons. Here I explore matters of the spirit in a way that, I hope, inspires thought within others. I am not here to tell you what to believe, and any viewpoint is welcome…

I regret that I need to start this post with some sad news. We recently learned that one of my teenage step-daughter’s friends passed away last Saturday. We don’t know the circumstances of his death, only that ‘he was found in the morning.’ Now, just that phrase sends a parent in to a frenzy. Was he in to drugs? Was it suicide?

Fatherhood Friday: Week In Review

Friday, February 19th, 2010

This week has been an absolute whirlwind for our family. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, we took Kat down to learn about the People to People student ambassador program, Calli has started to be able to use the potty when we’re out, and Tristin turned six months old, leading to that all important milestone of eating food.

So just as the week was a blur for us, please enjoy this whirlwind photo tour of the weeks highlights!

What is Calli sitting on? A stone wall?

Looking To The Future! (or, I have 4 Valentines!)

Anthropomorphic Valentine, circa 1950-1960

This Friday before Valentine’s Day, let me just join PJ Mullen in saying ‘I hate Valentine’s Day!‘ That being said, I find myself this Valentine season thinking about how I went from a nerdy kid who hated Valentine’s Day because I couldn’t get (read muster up the courage to get) a girl, to a husband and father with four Valentines that hates being told there’s one particular day to celebrate your love. Although I generally do not enjoy planning the future further out than tomorrow, I find myself looking to the future for my 4 Valentines…

This Episode of Sesame Street Is Brought To You By The Letter I … Phone?

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Before I blow full steam ahead on this post, I want to take you back in time. Through the magic of YouTube, please go back with me to the 1970’s, and a very familiar television show opening. I bet you can sing along…

Now, did you notice anything? Kids? Ok. A big yellow 7 year old bird? Good! Notice anything else? Were the kids outside?! AND they were PLAYING!!!! Keep this in mind as I continue to rant…

Yesterday, Christina Warren of Mashable.com wrote a piece praising Sesame Street and their Elmo iPhone app. Take a look:

Sunday Sermon: The Mormons Came Calling, And I INVITED THEM IN!!!

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

To those of us that are not Mormon, we see them as a mystery, and a lot of us see them as a nuisance. Yet when the Mormons came calling to my home, I let them in to my home three times! But before I tell you about that, please allow me to define what I mean by my new ‘Sunday Sermon’ feature here at Howefitz Blog.

I’m calling this feature ‘Sunday Sermon’, but it’s anything but a sermon. To me, a sermon implies someone will stand at a pulpit and relay his or her interpretation of a religious document as if their interpretation were the complete truth. Furthermore, they would expect you to buy  in to their interpretation and take it on as your own.

A Little Fatherly Randomness…

Friday, January 29th, 2010

This post brought to you by Dad-Blogs' FatherHood Friday. Be sure to swing by for all the other great Dads and Moms who love to share their lives online!

I’ve spent all morning working on today’s post, well, the bits of the morning where I wasn’t taking The Teenager to school. Then there were the times I was holding the baby, which is a chore, let me tell you. Every time I hold that warm little snuggly body against me I can’t help thinking that I’d much rather be in front of my glaring blank white computer screen instead of throwing the baby in to the air and hearing his sweet, genuine giggle as I tickle under his ribs with my nose. Who wants that? ;)
